Native Trees and Shrubs

What is a Native Tree or Shrub?

A tree or shrub is considered a native species if it existed before cities, towns, and farms appeared in Iowa. Historically, they are adapted to Iowa’s seasonal climate swings and provide valuable food and shelter for wildlife.

Like native prairie grasses and flowers, native trees have very deep root systems that can soak up large amounts of rainwater. Planting these species on your property not only soaks up excess water; they also provide the added benefit of shading and cooling your yard and your house.

The Numbers:

  • Trees reduce stormwater runoff by 2-7%
  • A mature tree can store 50 to 100 gallons of water during large storms.
  • Trees remove pollutants through their deep root systems.

When choosing native species for your yard, it is important to consider what your goals are for your property:

  • Do you want to provide food or shelter for a certain type of wildlife?
  • Do you want to add color to your property?
  • How much maintenance are you willing to give to caring for the tree or shrub?
